Gentianella amarella subsp. amarella is the common subspecies across most of Britain; it is replaced in Ireland by the larger-flowered G. amarella subsp. hibernica.

Gentianella amarella subsp. septentrionalis has paler flowers and grows at sites from northern England to Shetland and possibly in Iceland.
